Wind Turbine Blade Lifting

Under the influence of wind, wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy on the rotor shaft, which in turn drives the generator to rotate and generate electricity. Wind turbine blades are relatively long, and during lifting, they are secured using flat webbing sling at both ends. The lifting sling hooks onto the crane, which then performs the lifting operation.

Wind Turbine Blade Installation

The installation of blades is carried out using a method of ground assembly and overall lifting. This construction method has the advantages of reducing high-altitude work, lowering costs, and speeding up the process. Before installation, a comprehensive inspection of the blades and hub must be conducted to confirm whether they have been damaged during transportation.

At the middle of each blade, adjustable supports are used to hold the blades in place, followed by adjustments and assembly. The hub and blades are assembled on the ground, with the blades supported horizontally by brackets and secured with special clamps. Slings are tied to two of the blades, while a 100-ton crane hooks the remaining blade tip with a flat webbing sling. When lifting the blades and hub with a 1000-ton crane, to prevent the blades from swinging, 3 to 6 assembly workers on the ground hold the slings to control the swing until the blades reach the installation height. One of the blades hanging down is lifted off the ground by a 100-ton crane. During the lifting process, it is forbidden for the blades to collide with the crane, tower, or nacelle, and it is ensured that the slings do not get tangled. The position of the traction slings must be continuously adjusted to control the blade's swing. Once the blades are upright, the 100-ton crane releases the flat webbing sling. The 1000-ton crane lifts the blades and hub to the main shaft flange of the wind turbine nacelle, where installation workers inside the nacelle perform the aerial assembly, aligning and tightening the hub with the main shaft flange, and tightening all connection bolts to the designed torque.

After installation, the verticality of the tower is checked. Once verified, all foundation bolts connecting the tower to the base are tightened to the designed torque, followed by a secondary concrete pouring at the connection area between the foundation and the bottom flange of the tower. The installed wind turbine is then subjected to commissioning.
