Slackline, derived from "slack" meaning "loose" and "line" meaning "rope," is different from walking on a taut steel wire. Firstly, the elasticity of the slackline is significant, especially when it is long, making walking on it akin to bouncing on a trampoline. Secondly, maintaining balance on the slackline relies entirely on the body's adjustments and control, without the use of balancing poles or other auxiliary equipment. Although it appears much more challenging, slackliners generally wear safety ropes around their waists and legs, and there is a backup rope attached underneath the slackline. As long as the slackline and the backup rope do not break simultaneously, it is usually quite safe.

The common forms of slacklining can generally be categorized into three main types: tricklining, highlining, and longlining. Tricklining primarily involves performing acrobatic tricks and maneuvers on the slackline. And highlining mainly involves setting up the slackline at significant heights, typically in natural settings like canyons or on buildings. But longlining focuses on setting up very long slacklines, sometimes spanning hundreds of meters.

Trickline slackline, a form that emerged in the first decade of the 21st century, initially in Europe, is characterized by its coolness, simple equipment, easy setup, and relatively low space requirements, attracting more people to participate. Players not only walk on the slackline but also perform rolls, jumps, chest bounces, back bounces, 180-degree and 720-degree spins, front flips, side flips, and more. In short, it evokes a feeling of exhilaration upon sight. The vibrant young generation has played a significant role in driving the entire slacklining movement forward.

Highline slacklining involves setting up the slackline in high places such as mountains, canyons, or skyscrapers. It is a sport that combines fashion, extreme challenges, visual appeal, and competitive elements. Highline slacklining is extremely dangerous and poses immense challenge. It does not rely on any balancing tools; instead, it relies on the body's twisting and the swinging of the arms to adjust the center of gravity and maintain balance. This sport demands exceptionally high physical and mental qualities from the participants.

Longline slacklining can range from several dozen meters to several hundred meters, sometimes even longer. Due to their length, longlines require significant tension to maintain stability and safety. Typically longlines are set up in natural environments such as forests, canyons, or across bodies of water.

This slacklining line or webbing is typically made from high-strength polymers and consists of long and short parts, each with reinforced loops at the ends for durability and anchor points. The connection is made with a zinc-plated steel ratchet that joins the long and short ports to form a complete line, allowing for adjustment of tension as needed. For outdoor setups between trees (or poles with a diameter greater than 30CM), a non-woven fabric tree protector pad is usually provided.

Currently, the materials used for slacklines on the market include nylon, polyester (PET), and Dyneema, as well as mixed materials. Different materials have varying degrees of elasticity: nylon has the highest elasticity (making it difficult to tighten), followed by polyester, which results in a relatively lower market share for nylon. The weight per meter of different materials also varies; when the length is fixed, a lighter weight theoretically makes the slackline easier to control. Polyester slacklines, due to their low elasticity, low water absorption, and low moisture regain, are easy to store and have won the favor of most slackliners.

Slacklining competitors generally prefer to avoid nylon-based slacklines due to their high elongation rate and tendency to absorb water compared to polyester. Therefore, polyester slacklines have a higher market share.
