The safe transportation of automobiles is of utmost importance. Understanding the forces acting on the cargo during vehicle transport is essential for correctly using tie-down tools to secure the automobile, ensuring that it does not loosen or fall during transit.

In the direction of the vehicle's forward motion, sudden braking causes a force towards the cab, which is 0.8 times the weight of the cargo. When the transport vehicle turns, the cargo experiences an outward centrifugal force, which is 0.5 times the weight of the cargo. When the transport vehicle starts, the cargo experiences a backward force, which is also 0.5 times the weight of the cargo. In the vertical direction, due to bumps, the cargo experiences an upward or downward force, which is 0.8 times the weight of the cargo.

To counteract these forces, it is essential for the cargo to have sufficient friction with the load surface. Without external forces, the friction generated by the cargo's own weight alone is insufficient. In such cases, tie-down straps must be used to ensure adequate friction between the cargo and the load surface, or to secure the cargo in place. For example, a 5-ton car, when the friction coefficient is 0.3, can only generate 1.5 tons of friction. When the transporter, or trailer brakes suddenly, the cargo experiences a forward thrust of 4 tons. Therefore, the additional 4 tons of force must be achieved through ratchet car tie-downs. The car lashing strap, sold in sets of four, are threaded through the four tires of the car, securely fastening it to the flatbed.
